Cincinnati hotspots

By: Zach Julian

I would be lying if I said this wasn’t for the new class of first years, so here it goes: welcome to Xavier, class of 2017.

Now that we got that out of the way, we can get down to the real reason for this article: the many wonders of Cincinnati.

I know that Manresa was about welcoming you to this amazing city, but I would like to go deeper and inform you of the many hot spots around Cincinnati and what each has to offer.

I will start with the closest, which is Norwood. You, as a Xavier student, are currently in Norwood, but if you go up Mason-Montgomery Road, you can discover everything you will need as a college student: a grocery store, gas stations and at least five fast-food restaurants all within five minutes of campus.

This place will be your home and it does have all of the bare necessities to supply your campus lifestyle.

If you are looking to go a little farther, I would suggest Rookwood and Hyde Park. Both of these neighborhoods boast some delicious eateries, from sushi to authentic Mexican food. You should also make time to try Graeter’s ice cream, a Cincinnati delicacy.

Both Rookwood and Hyde Park have excellent shopping locations, though Hyde Park has more local independent businesses while Rookwood has more name-brand commercial shopping.

And while this last place isn’t technically in Ohio, Newport on the Levee is just a hop, skip and a jump across the river.

If you take Interstate 71-South and get off of the first exit across the Ohio River, you will find Newport.

This place has a plethora of things to do, from the Newport Aquarium, delicious food and the Newport Mall complete with an AMC movie theater.

I don’t know a Xavier student who does not take the trip down to Newport every once in a blue moon.

I hope that this article has been helpful to you, but if you really want to know more, just ask a local Cincinnatian and they can tell you what you need to know.

Enjoy your year here, class of 2017.
