Antigone comes to Playhouse

Inspired by the traditions of Greek theatre tragedy, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s popular family series “Off the Hill” will continue the 2015-16 season with performances of the world premiere of John Yearly’s adaptation of the legendary tale “Antigone.”

“Antigone” is a classic Greek legend that follows the story of a woman named Antigone and her marriage to Prince Haemon. With this modern adaptation, after a terrible war the two desire to bring peace and stability to their city through their marriage.

However, the strong will of the king leaves Antigone in a position where she is forced to choose between obeying the laws of man and honoring her loyalty to her family.

The cast and creative team have worked together to develop a version of the tale that will be relatable to modern audiences. Director Cristina Alicea says that the reworking of this classic tale by John Yearly is “inspired.” Alicea also commented on the difficulty of engaging audiences that already know the outcome of a tale, and incorporating modern elements while keeping the moral of the play clear.

“Try as you might, the end is inevitable. All we can do as an audience is bear witness to the events and learn from them. It is my aim to tread the line between feeling very modern (slick and cool) while still paying homage to the original Greek style,” Alicea said.

The “Antigone” cast will feature Renika Williams as Antigone and Carlton Stimmel as Haemon, both of whom are members of the Playhouse’s 2015-16 Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company.

Unlike previous “Off the Hill” productions, the premiere of this play will debut at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Playhouse’s “on the hill” location.

Tickets for the Playhouse performances of “Antigone” can be purchased at the Playhouse Box Office for $5. The play is recommended for ages 11 and up and will tour Tristate community venues from Jan. 24 – Feb. 21 after its premiere.
