The Xavier men and women’s swim teams wrapped up their tri-meet at West Virginia on Saturday. The women picked up a win over Seton Hall and a loss to WVU. The men’s team lost to both of its opponents.

The women’s team started off well on Friday, with a third-place finish in the 400 medley, posting a top time in the Big East for this season. Freshman Emma Kauffeld claimed the top spot in distance, posting a time of 10:30.40 in the 1000 free.

“For the 1000, I wanted to focus on racing instead of the time,” Kauffeld said about her win.

Sophomore Emily Conners and junior Caroline Gaertner were able to claim second in the 50 free and 100 back, respectfully.

On Saturday, Conners continued her strong start with a winning time of 52.24 in the 100 free. Kauffeld followed up her win with a second place finish in the 500 free. The women’s team closed the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, with Conners, Gaertner, sophomore Abby Garner and senior Paxtyn Drew posting a season-best time in the event.

“Overall, I’m happy that the girls were able to beat Seton Hall,” Kauffeld said after the meet. “Since Xavier doesn’t have diving, it can be hard to overcome the point deficit. But we were able to, and it makes me excited for the conference and to see what our team can do there.”

The men’s team had a rougher weekend, falling behind both Seton Hall and WVU. It opened up the meet with a time of 3:26.40 in the 400 medley, placing fourth. Freshman Nick Mahoney placed third in the 1000 free with a time of 9:50.69, and fellow freshman Christian Thomas posted a season-best 21.51 in the 50 free.

Saturday saw more success for the men’s team, with junior Matthew Dyer posting Big East-best times in the 200 breast and 400 IM, 2:07.67 and 4:11.14, respectfully. Xavier closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, posting a Big East best time of 1:25.04.

The teams look to improve in their next meet on Saturday at Denison.
