Senior right side hitter Morgan Finn is coming off a strong performance in one of Xavier volleyball’s tournaments. She was named to the All-tournament team at the Puerto Rico Clasico.
Throughout the tournament, Finn tallied 18 kills and seven blocks. While her success remains evident on the volleyball court, she has also achieved great success off the court.
Finn, an accounting major, is also minoring in math and information systems. She remains busy throughout the school year and is already well-situated for life after college.
“I will be working for Deloitte in public accounting in Washington, D.C.,” Finn said. “I interned there this summer and met some great people. I am definitely looking forward to moving there and being in a bigger city with so much to do.”
The 2018 season is Finn’s final year as a Musketeer. She plans to make the most of it and leave her mark on the Xavier program.
“As a senior, I want to help my class leave a legacy for any future Xavier volleyball team,” she said. “We are a very close-knit team, and I would always love for it to stay that way. As a team, we created goals in the spring that included making it to the Big East tournament in Omaha and then going on to the conference tournament, and we work towards achieving those goals every day in the practice gym.
“I want to look back on this season and my collegiate career and have absolutely no regrets.”
Being a student athlete is not easy, but it is a lifestyle Finn has become accustomed to.
Finn stated that, with time, it has become the norm. There are times when she falls behind on her academic work, but over the years she has found ways to overcome time management issues.
Finn emphasized that she doesn’t want her college life to be any other way because she is doing what she loves.
Finn sometimes misses out on college experiences when the team travels out of town, but even then, she is with the volleyball family she has grown to be a part of.
The Musketeers recently took a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to participate in the Puerto Rico Clasico.
Finn reflected on this time with her team saying: “It was an amazing experience. Our teammate, Laura (Grossman), is from San Juan, so we got to explore a lot of her favorite places, restaurants, beaches, etc. We visited her home as well.”
“I loved going to Puerto Rico and seeing where she grew up and how different some of the culture is. Her mom hosted us for dinner one of the nights and they had a little band come and play and everyone was singing and dancing. It was amazing,” she added.
The trip wasn’t all about volleyball.
The team also gave back to the community on the trip, which provided a rewarding experience.
“We hosted a clinic for young children in the area, even though we did not speak Spanish,” Finn said.
“Most of them knew little to no English. It was crazy to see how we could still connect through athletics. The kids were eager to learn and improve and were in awe of the people who came to teach them.”
Finn’s trip was capped by being named to the All-tournament team.
“It’s definitely a cool feeling to be recognized for the work you are putting in,” Finn said about getting the honor.
“It makes me want to work harder for my teammates, as they always put me in the best possible situations on the court, and I want to continue to do the same for them,” Finn said.
She mentioned teammates who also have been recognized as All-tournament selections for the other competitions the team has played in include Grossman, junior Audrey Adama and senior McKena Estes.
“It truly shows the depth of our team, as it’s not the same person receiving the honors each weekend,” Finn said.
Finn’s quest for personal success continues Friday, when the Musketeers play in the Queen City Invitational.
