Last Monday, Findlay Market announced that the beloved bakery, Em’s Bread Bakery. will be closing for good.
For the last eight years, Em’s Bread Bakery has offered Findlay Market patrons a chance to enjoy delicious bread made from that same sourdough starter. The bakery went to post on their social media account to thank the numerous employees that the bakery has had over the years. The post also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Findlay Market for being a wonderful home for the business, as well as to all the other vendors within the market for their support and camaraderie throughout the years.
In her post, founder Meliissa Schoeder, did not specify the reasons for the bakery’s closure this time.
First Year biology major Sarah Erskine grew up on their sourdough bread. Whenever her family would take trips to Cincinnati from her hometown outside of Dayton, they would stop by Em’s Bread Bakery occasionally to have a bite on their trips to Findlay Market.

“I’m so sad they’re closing. They were always so nice there. It was always a nice place I could go, and I felt at home. The staff was always so sweet and welcoming. I’m going to miss going there,” Erskine said.
Em’s was founded in 1993 when Melissa Schroeder, a mother of three, decided to use her mother’s sourdough starter to bake and sell bread. This venture allowed her to work from home while remaining active in her children’s lives. Each morning, she would rise at 4 a.m. to bake and deliver bread throughout the day. Since 2015, Em’s has been a staple at Findlay Market.
“Their bread was so freaking good. Like heavenly. I eat a lot of bread and theirs was just the best.” Erksine said.
The last day to enjoy the delicious sourdough bread from Em’s Bakery was October 13th of this year, marking a bittersweet farewell for loyal customers. This final chance allowed bread lovers to savor their favorite loaves and create lasting memories before the bakery closes its doors for good.
