Hollywood Rallies for Artists’ Mental Health

By Hannah Wolke, Digital Communications Manager

Blackline, a charity focused on supporting artists’ mental health, has expressed its overwhelming gratitude for the surge of support it has received since Chappell Roan’s powerful call for better rights for musicians at this year’s Grammys.

The “Pink Pony Club” artist made a generous donation following the deeply emotional speech she gave while accepting her award for Best New Artist. During her speech, she spoke passionately about the need for improved healthcare and support for those working in the music industry. After former music executive Jeff Rabhan criticized her, she didn’t hesitate to stand her ground.

Roan responded by challenging Rabhan to match her donation of $25,000 to the “We Got You” campaign, an initiative by Backline that aims to provide mental health resources for musicians.

In the wake of Roan’s speech, Backline has seen a significant increase in support, particularly after a music executive criticized her remarks in a column, calling her statement “misinformed.”

Despite the criticism, the charity’s director, Hilary Gleason, expressed immense gratitude for Roan’s efforts.

Despite Roan’s direct challenge, Rabhan declined to contribute, dismissing her request as a “right idea pointed in the wrong direction.” However, Chappell’s challenge sparked an outpouring of support from her music industry peers.

Pop artist Sabrina Carpenter was one of the first to step up, matching Roan’s $25,000 donation without hesitation. Her support not only amplified Roan’s efforts, but also sent a strong message about the importance of artist solidarity and the need for change within the industry.

Carpenter raised $500,000 on her Short and Sweet tour specifically to benefit mental health through the organization Plus1.

Artist Noah Kahan also, answered Roan’s challenge, offering his own $25,000 donation. His contribution reflected a broader commitment among artists to use their platforms and resources to address critical issues affecting their peers.

Artist Charli XCX, another vocal advocate for mental health awareness, followed suit by matching Roan’s original donation.

The outpouring of support has highlighted the power of artists like Roan to inspire change and raise awareness for important causes, especially regarding mental health resources for those in the music industry.
