SGA Notes: New Police Chief Aaron Jones Hopes to Get to Know the Xavier Community

By Rory McNelley, Staff Writer

New Xavier Chief of Police Aaron Jones came to speak to SGA about the transition into his new role.

Chief Jones is a lifelong resident of Cincinnati and grew up in Oakley. He has worked in numerous departments within the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) as a patrol officer, undercover officer, internal affairs officer and district commander.

As a double Xavier graduate, he has his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice. First serving Xavier as an adjunct professor of criminal justice, he is excited for this next chapter.

“I believe Xavier deserves a good police chief who cares about the students and the staff here, so that is why I stepped into this role. I want the campus to feel connected to each other and to our department,” Chief Jones said about his goals for the department.

After finishing his master’s at Xavier, he went on to earn his law degree at Northern Kentucky University. He provided legal advice and training to the CPD.

Chief Jones addressed student concerns about an increase in open container citations and police presence near off-campus housing.

“My directive will be to handle it in the least intrusive way possible. We want you to get home safe. That is our goal. I plan to work with the officers about this,” Chief Jones said.
