The imminent 2024 elections are notable for Xavier’s first-year class. For most, if not all, first-years this will be their first opportunity to cast their vote in a national election. Several first years showed their thoughts on this opportunity.
“I’m fired up for the election. I’ve never been so excited for an election, I’m excited to vote using the power of democracy. I don’t like getting into political arguments but I think it’s important for those political arguments to take place because that is what democracy is,” first-year Parker Salestrom said.
In regards to how he feels about the state of democracy, Salestrom said “I feel very positive about the current state of democracy as young voters this year have more power than they have ever more power for change.”
“I am a little nervous for the next election just because I know no matter who wins everyone’s going to be upset. I think it’s frustrating not having a candidate on either side which the majority of people Trust. but this also happens a lot so it’s not too surprising” First-year Phoebe Louis said.

Gallagher Student Center, where inside Xavier Students can find Arrupe Overlook.
“I’m confident while also nervous because opinions are increasingly polarized so people are hopefully going to vote,” she said.
“I’m nervous for the upcoming election due to the polarity and division of the parties. I am sure many people are looking forward to the election, and hoping it will progress our country, but I do not see any good coming out of it. I think it will just make everyone more angry, and nothing gets done when everyone is fighting”, first year. Isabel Curren said in regard to her feelings on the election.
“I think the state of democracy is stable because I do not think the outcome of the election will affect the current state of democracy,” she said.
Students are encouraged to vote in this upcoming election cycle on November Fifth. There will be no classes, and polls will be held open from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Students registered to vote at Xavier residence halls and apartments can vote in the Arrupe Overlook. Students registered at non-campus Norwood and Cincinnati residences can find their polling place at votehamiltoncountyohio.gov/where-to-vote/0
