Golf teams continue strong play

Men’s golf continued play this past weekend at the NYX Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
The team tied for seventh place, and freshman Jose Montaño turned in an individual win for his second tournament victory.

During the first day of the invitational, Montaño was tied for the lead in birdies with five leaving him tied for fifth in the field.

In the second round, senior Korey Ward led in birdies and tied for 10th place with a score of 67. Overall, the team wound up in 10th place after the first day with a combined shooting of 584 (+16).

The team was nine strokes outside of the top five and 19 strokes from first.
The team battled in a close competition, only to end up in seventh place— just five strokes outside of the top five. Montaño ended up with 11 birdies, the second most in the field behind Ward’s 12.

Montaño’s under-par round clinched the overall individual championship for him.
Xavier’s men’s golf team will continue its season April 20 to 21 in Cincinnati at the Xavier Invitational before the Big East Tournament.

Women’s golf continued play on April 10 to 11 at the 2015 Murray State Time Warner Invitational in Murray, Ky.

The team placed third overall with four members in the top 25: freshman Hanna Lee (ninth), senior Abby Smith (14th), junior Shane Crutchfield (18th) and sophomore Grace Howie (t-24th).
On the first day of the invitational, the team finished in fourth place, just one stroke behind Morehead State with a score of 620 (+45) after 36 holes of play.

Smith ended the day in eighth place after a jump from a tie for 28th due to an even par of 72 in the second round of play.

The first and second round for Lee ended with a consistent 78 and 77, respectively, before her jump in the final round of play. Lee’s score of 75 in the third round and six birdies throughout the event helped her place ninth overall, only six shots from first place. She finished two strokes ahead of Smith, who placed two strokes ahead of Crutchfield.

The team will travel to compete next at the Big East Tournament, April 16 to18 in Daytona, Fla.
