Ludlow Garage first opened its doors in 1969 when Jim Tarbell decided to turn an automotive garage into a rock-androll club. The venue hosted many famous musicians during its prime from BB King to Janis Joplin and even the Allman Brothers Band. In fact, the Allman Brothers Band released a live album of their performance at the venue, “Live at Ludlow Garage 1970.”

Only a few years after it opened, Ludlow Garage had to close its doors because the music scene was no longer found in small clubs. It had moved to bigger venues, and places like Cincinnati Gardens became the spot to hear musicians perform. Eight years ago, current owner Scott Crawford purchased the building and opened up a restaurant called Olives. Crawford decided to close Olives in July and convert the basement back into a music venue.

The former dining room underwent renovations and will now be called “Live! at the Ludlow Garage.” The basement will serve dinner and drinks to its patrons and will seat over 200 people at tables. The venue is meant to be intimate, which sets it apart from other theaters and music halls. The upstairs space will also be utilized as a small restaurant that will seat roughly 80 people.

Live! at the Ludlow Garage is expected to cater to many genres of music including but not limited to country, jazz and rock. There have already been some artists scheduled to play at the venue including Livingston Taylor, Howie Day and Lee Dewyze. Cinematic pop singer/songwriter and pianist Vanessa Carlton will be performing on opening night on Oct. 29. Carlton is best known for her hit single “A Thousand Miles” that was released in 2002. Live! at the Ludlow Garage is located s at 342 Ludlow Ave., a short drive from campus. All interested in attending the show are advised to arrive early. Carlton is expected to take the stage at 8:15 p.m.
