Cincinnati Spotlight: Here’s a Tip, Go to Zip’s!

By Rory McNelley, Staff Writer

Zip’s, a family-owned restaurant in the heart of Mt. Lookout nearing it’s 100th anniversary, is the perfect place for a casual meal.

Less than a 15-minute drive from campus, they are known for their cheeseburgers and classic Cincinnati chili. The local favorite has a signature blend of ground beef that gets delivered every day. But it is not just good food Zip’s has to offer. Good prices and an enjoyable atmosphere put this place in my top 10.

I had difficulty deciding between the classic burger, chicken tenders, and grilled cheese. I chose to order a classic burger with a side of fries and was pleased with both the meal and its price. The meal all together set me back only $10, including my Diet Coke.

The menu, though brief, has a lot to offer. Chili, hot dogs, soup and salad are only a few options to choose from. The food comes out quick and hot; my friend and I were in and out in about 30 minutes. The rotating menu includes desserts changing every day adds a fun surprise to every visit.

“It’s a family tradition to go before and after Xavier games. I’ve gotten the same order for as long as I can remember: a grilled cheese and bowl of chili,” first-year Philosophy, Politics, and the Public major Xavier student Claire Wagner, who first introduced me to the restaurant during our first semester, said.

In addition to the French fries, my favorite part of Zip’s is the train that circles around the ceiling. If you are lucky enough, they will let you go behind the counter to blow the whistle. Every time you look up, you will notice a new, unique decoration.

“We will be turning 100 in July 2026, so we are planning a yearlong party that will start this summer. We are brewing beers with local breweries, planning giveaways and other specials to celebrate a century,” owner Mike Burke said.

Burke’s restaurant is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and casual dining experience. The only downsides are the line and the parking. You will need to park on the street, and it can be quite the walk on a busy night. When you arrive, you can base your wait time on the line length. Seating yourselves when you see an open table can be a challenge in the small entryway.

Lines through the narrow front hallway shuffle as a table for two opens up when a table of four is next in line. If you do not mind standing and waiting you will be just fine, but if you prefer to give your phone number and wait for a text, this place might not be for you.

Overall, Zip’s is one of my favorite spots in Cincinnati. Reminding me of home, the small diner-like restaurant gives the city a small-town feel, and the friendliness of the staff make you feel like part of the family. Stop by this hidden gem whenever you pass through Mt. Lookout for a quick, and easy and delicious meal by yourself or with 10 others.
