DIFT Program Recognized in National Rankings

The Digital Innovation, Film and Television (DIFT) program at Xavier has officially earned the title of the top media and film program in the state of Ohio, according to the Broadcast Education Association (BEA).

The BEA is a festival of media arts that provides school rankings based on student achievements. The recognition places the program among the best in the nation, showcasing its excellence in creativity, storytelling and production.

The program ranked 38th in the nation for media, 22nd in the nation for film and video and ninth nationally for scriptwriting. What stands out most to students and staff alike is being named first in the state of Ohio in both media and film and video categories. Compared to other universities, Xavier’s DIFT program is relatively small, so its BEA rankings are highly regarded by many.

“I think the BEA rankings of the DIFT program accurately reflect what we do here,” professor Kyle Howland said. “So that No. 22 ranking is the highest of any college in Ohio and any Jesuit college.”

Xavier’s DIFT program helps students become creative, adaptable leaders in today’s digital world. Through hands-on projects and a mix of classes across different areas, students build the skills they need for careers in film, television, broadcasting, producing, content creation and new media technologies.

Rooted in Jesuit education, Xavier’s DIFT program teaches students that filmmaking is about more than just cameras and editing; it is about purpose. The program encourages students to think critically, act with compassion and use their creativity to make a difference.

While learning digital video production skills and techniques, students also explore how film and media can be powerful tools for storytelling, advocacy and positive change in their communities and beyond.

As a senior, students in the program complete a capstone project where they produce a full-length film that meets professional industry standards. From casting and directing to editing and post-production, the project gives students the chance to experience every stage of filmmaking firsthand.

Xavier’s DIFT program was recognized in BEA’s national rankings.

“I think that the ranking really gives people in the program a feeling of confidence going into the workforce,” senior DIFT major and senior oversight for Film & TV club Maitte Delgado said. “It really does make me feel that I am getting the best that I can.”

Located in Cincinnati, Xavier places students in the heart of a growing film industry, surrounded by production companies, studios and experienced professionals. The city’s creative community gives students valuable opportunities to connect, collaborate and gain real-world experience beyond the classroom.

The recognition as Ohio’s top-ranked film and media program shines a spotlight on the dedication of both the students and staff who continue to raise the bar each year.

“We at DIFT strive for excellence and a sense of belonging in all we do. We are proud of the rankings; however, that is not our focus. If you strive for the best, the awards and rankings follow,” DIFT program director Blis DeVault said. “For such a small program, people should recognize the significance of these rankings as we compete with much larger programs. Come join us!”

With national recognition and growing interest from new students, the DIFT program shows no signs of slowing down. As Xavier celebrates this achievement, one thing is clear: Ohio’s top film and media program is shaping the next generation of storytellers.
