As season three of “Euphoria” is expected to release in this upcoming spring, Sydney Sweeney, who stars in the hit HBO show as Cassie, has found herself in some controversy.
Since the notorious American Eagle advertisement in which Sweeney spoke about having “great jeans,” the hate for Sweeney has soared. Viewers were upset, arguing that the line was supporting eugenics, the belief that the human species would be improved with selective breeding.
Sweeney has additionally received backlash for her acting skills. Actress Ruby Rose, known for playing Stella Carlin in the hit show “Orange Is the New Black,” called her a “cretin” and claimed she “ruined the film” after the recent release of box office flop “Christy.” The film, which Sweeney stars in, focuses on the life of boxer Christy Martin and her life with abusive manager and husband James Martin.
Some speculate that due to many recent controversies regarding Sweeney, her “Euphoria” co-star Zendaya is reportedly refusing to do any promotions for the upcoming season of the show.
Zendaya has long opposed President Donald Trump since the 2016 election, when she posted online about being “speechless, petrified, heartbroken and weary” because of the election results. That being said, her alleged feelings towards Sweeney and her political beliefs are not a surprise to fans, since Sweeney was revealed to be a registered Republican.
“The whole drama between the two will definitely make things a little weird on Euphoria. If they’re really not getting along, it might mess (up) how much they film together or how the promos look for the next season,” junior education major Liv Paxton said.

Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney have starred together in the hit HBO show “Euphoria” since 2019.
There have been large gaps between releases of new seasons. The first season of “Euphoria” was released back in 2019 and the second was released in 2022.
The COVID-19 pandemic is to blame for the late release of season two. The writers and actors strike in 2023, along with the tragic deaths of “Euphoria” star Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen, postponed production of season three.
However, the controversy could also encourage viewership of the show as it did to sales following Sweeney’s promotion of American Eagle jeans back in late July.
“The show has a huge platform so I don’t think it will stop anything from happening. If anything, the drama might make the audience even more curious about the new season,” Paxton said.
Although neither of them have publicly commented on the alleged feud, more information is bound to come out as the third season’s release date approaches.
