OPINION – Caleb Williams Has What It Takes to be a Top Quarterback in the NFL

By Ben Jenkins, Newswire Intern

Ice Man, Caleb Williams, just wrapped up his sophomore campaign.

Williams led the Chicago Bears to their first playoff win in 16 years and brought hope back to the city. Although Williams has faced much scrutiny, he accomplished so much in his second season. He is the future of the Bears and the NFL.

Williams has been polarizing since his days at the University of Southern California. He is not the prototypical NFL quarterback, but this past year he proved why having unique abilities on the gridiron leads to winning.

For a player like Williams, looking past the box score is necessary for evaluating the value he brings to a team. He can make plays that no quarterback in NFL history could make, and he put that on display every week.

Williams has some of the most elite arm talent and athleticism in the NFL and he is arguably the clutchest player in the league. He led the Bears to six fourth quarter comebacks with six game winning drives this season. Throughout those games he made absurd throw after absurd throw.

Along with all of the comebacks and mind boggling throws, he led the Bears to two of their most memorable wins in recent history. In week 16, with the NFC North Title on the line and the rival Green Bay Packers in town, Williams and the Bears pulled off a comeback for the ages.

Down 10 points with three minutes left, Williams led the Bears down the field to score. They then recovered an onside kick and kicked a field goal to force overtime. In overtime, Williams connected with D.J. Moore on a pass that traveled over 50 yards in the air to knock off the Packers. A play that will forever be remembered in Chicago.

Somehow, this was not his best game or moment versus the Packers this year. The two rivals met again in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

The Packers jumped out to a 21-3 lead by halftime. It seemed as though all the life had been sucked out of Soldier Field, but the Bears did not give in and made it a competitive game by the fourth quarter.

The Bears were down 27-16 with five minutes and 36 seconds on the clock, staring down a fourth and eight with the season on the line. Caleb faced pressure immediately and was forced to roll to his left. He proceeded to jump to avoid a sack and all in the same motion layer a throw over the flat defender and in front of the safety to get the first down. One of the greatest throws in playoff history.

The Bears went on to get a stop and go on to score again and win the game, beating the Packers in the playoffs. Chicago had not felt this type of hope in decades.

Many critics point to his completion percentage or the easier throws he misses from time to time as reasons why he cannot be a star quarterback in the league. Football is not all numbers. When players make unfathomable plays in the biggest moments, fans must look past the numbers

Caleb Williams has the “it” factor, and he will be one of, if not the best, quarterback in the NFL for years to come.
