Gaffney and women’s basketball start season strong

By: Kyle Tooley ~Guest Writer~ The Xavier women’s basketball team came out of the gates hot, posting a 4-1 record with its only loss coming from undefeated Michigan on the road. It seems that with coach Brian Neal now able to firmly install his system in his second full season at the helm, the team is headed in the right direction. Preseason All-Big East selection Raeshaun Gaffney, the redshirt junior out of Fairfield, Ohio, is leading the way for the Musketeers, with 11.5 points per game (ppg). Women’s team splits two on the road

By: Adam Tortelli ~Staff Writer~ The Xavier women’s basketball team had a full schedule when traveling along the east coast this past weekend. The Musketeers returned to Cincinnati this weekend after splitting two games against conference opponents, beating Georgetown and losing to Villanova. On Feb. 13, the team took down the struggling Georgetown Hoyas in the nation’s capital by a score of 60-55. Sophomore guard Raeshaun Gaffney led the team with 12 points in conjunction with double digit scoring from juniors guard Jenna Crittendon and forward Brianna Glover. Women’s basketball takes care of business

By: Adam Purvis ~Staff Writer~ The women’s basketball team opened its season with two home games against non-conference opponents. The musketeers won 75-51 on Nov. 5 against the Wofford College Terriers and 89-52 against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lions. Xavier quickly made up for the early 7-2 deficit by exploding on a 15-2 run, leaving the score 17-9 with 13:02 left to play in the first half. At the half, the Musketeers lead 36-26 against Wofford. Freshman guard Marquia Turner had a nice collegiate debut, leading the team with 8 points on 50 percent 3-point shooting at the half.
