Lorde advocates for Māori culture in unique EP

By Griffin Brammer, Staff Writer New Zealand singer-songwriter Ella Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde, has released an EP featuring five of her newest songs sung in the te reo Māori language. “Much of my value system around caring for the natural world comes from traditional Māori practices,” Lorde wrote in a newsletter to her fans. The artist released the album, entitled Te Ao Mārama, days ahead of New Zealand’s official Māori Language week, on Sept. 9.  The album features Māori covers of songs from Lorde’s new Solar Power album. Powerful earthquake shakes New Zealand

By: Isabel Demarco ~Staff Writer~ A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand early Monday, causing the deaths of at least two people and a large amount of damage to roads throughout the country. The region has continued to be hit by large aftershocks following the earthquake. After the initial earthquake, another one measuring 6.4 magnitude hit the same area, causing greater damage and tsunamis. The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management cautioned that citizens residing near the coast move inland as a means of avoiding the large waves and large amounts of flooding. Trade deal opens new markets

By: Regina Wright ~Staff Writer~ Negotiations that began in President Barack Obama’s first term for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have reached a final agreement among all 12 nations involved in the partnership. Brunei, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore formed the trade agreement in 2006. Later, Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Vietnam and the U.S. joined in the proposal of a trade agreement between these Pacific Rim countries.
