The men’s soccer team capped off its 2016 fall season in the Big East Quarterfinals. The Musketeers fell to No. 24 Creighton 3-1 on the road at Morrison Stadium.

Xavier tried to gain control at the start of the matchup. Junior forward Matt Vasquenza assisted in a goal by redshirt junior midfielder Walker Andriot in the sixth minute, his first of the season. The point marked the 11th Musketeer to score a goal this season, and the assist brought Vasquenza’s total to six this fall.

The Musketeers failed to produce more offense, and Creighton’s Myles Englis scored his team’s first goal only seconds before halftime. The Bluejays took the lead in the 83rd minute when Ricky Lopez-Espin scored on a penalty kick. Seven minutes later, Englis scored following a missed Xavier corner kick with three seconds left on the clock.

The Musketeers were held to five shots, the team’s second-lowest of the season. With the loss, Xavier moved to 8-8-3 overall and 4-4-1 in Big East play.

Xavier awaits the announcement of its postseason plans. The Musketeers will soon learn whether they are finished for the season or will compete in the NCAA Tournament. The Selection Show is at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, on NCAA.com.
