Even a Hurricane Couldn’t Stop Japanese House and Isaac Dunbar

Xavier’s Fall Fest Concert last Friday, originally planned under the open sky on the Xavier Yard, transformed into an intimate indoor experience due to unexpected rain from the passing Hurricane, Helene.

Despite the change in venue, fans were undeterred, packing the space to see the emotional depth and musical creativity of opener Isaac Dunbar and headliner The Japanese House.

Dunbar opened the night. His songs, including “Take It Slow,” “Love or Lack Thereof,” “Tainted Love” and “Bleach” highlighted his vocal range.

“His high notes are so good. They were so satisfying,” a first-year biology major Sarah Erskine, said.

Audience members were drawn to his artsy vibe, which first-year psychology major India Allen described as “very lovable.”

Dunbar first gained traction in the music industry when, at 14 years old, he posted a cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.”

Following Dunbar, The Japanese House took the stage, with their ethereal soundscapes and introspective lyrics. With tracks like “Boyhood,” “Baby Goes Again” and “Touching Yourself,” they offered a mix of chill vibes, silly attitude and poignant storytelling.

` “I wrote that song when I was like 17, and whenever I listen to it, I’m like ugh,” The Japanese House said about one of their first tracks, “Sunshine Baby.” The audience appreciated their candidness and humor.

“Despite the change to a chill version, they played it (Sunshine Baby) wonderfully. It was very smooth and chill,” first-year special education major Ava Konecki said.

Students were also charmed by their attitude, which added a unique touch to the evening. First year Digtial Innovation Film and Technology major Lauren Everling shared her excitement saying, “I have a dog named Sunshine, so seeing ‘Sunshine Baby’ was pretty cool!”

Though the original plan was to enjoy the show beneath the stars, the rain created a cozy, albeit limited, view of the night sky. This unexpected twist fostered a sense of togetherness among attendees as they gathered closely in the indoor venue, sharing smiles and laughter amidst the raindrops outside.
