ROTC at Xavier Empowers Women

At Xavier University, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program serves as a foundational pillar for developing the next generation of leaders. It offers cadets the opportunity to grow in leadership, physical endurance and military skills. The program provides a unique space to build confidence, develop strong bonds and prepare for both military and civilian leadership roles.

ROTC is designed to develop leaders, and for women, this process is no different. From the start, female cadets are involved in leadership challenges that enhance their decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills. The program emphasizes discipline, teamwork and physical endurance, which are key to success in the military. For many women, the experience is an empowering one, with opportunities to grow as leaders in a traditionally male-dominated field.

“My biggest skill that I have learned in my years of ROTC has been the ability to critically think and plan. ROTC puts me ahead in the workforce and shows that I can do what it takes to succeed,” senior ROTC Cadet Savannah Gehler said, asserting that ROTC is empowering for her.

While the ROTC program has become more inclusive, there are still misconceptions about what it means to be a woman in the military training environment. Some common misconceptions include the belief that women are less physically strong or that they face unequal opportunities.

Xavier ROTC throws out these myths, emphasizing that leadership and capability are not defined by gender but by determination, commitment and character. The program works hard to break down these barriers by creating a culture of inclusion where cadets are encouraged to support each other, proving that success is about effort and teamwork, not notions about gender.

One of the more unique aspects of the program is the strong sense of camaraderie among the cadets, especially among the women. This supportive network is vital, particularly in the face of challenges, and it allows women to connect, share experiences and uplift each other throughout their training.

“ROTC has allowed me to meet some of my best friends that share my interests and passions. We support each other through everything, and I know our friendship will last years after college,” said Junior Cadet Erin Hendricks.

We can say for certain that there is no battalion like Xavier. We share all of the same struggles and triumphs, which brings us all so much closer. All of us are extremely grateful for the friendships we have made within this organization.

These bonds, built through shared challenges and triumphs, help cadets develop not only as military leaders, but also as individuals who understand the importance of working together toward a common goal.

The sense of camaraderie extends beyond just the female cadets. All cadets, regardless of gender, are encouraged to form lasting connections that will serve them well both in their military careers and in life after graduation.

The ROTC program at Xavier University is not just about preparing women for military service; it is about developing confident, capable leaders who can thrive in any environment. Through training, strong bonds and a commitment to challenge, the program fosters a supportive space for women to grow.

As they prepare to take on leadership roles in the military and beyond, these women leave Xavier’s ROTC program not only ready to face any challenge, but also equipped with skills that will shape their lives.
