Pop the Campus Food Bubble

By Joseph Hammann, Staff Writer

Sometimes being a college student makes you hungry. Therefore, it is important in the major swing of college classes, clubs and sports to make sure you maintain good nutrition.

Of course, the main food source for students at Xavier is the Caf, where the employees work hard to make it as welcoming of a central dining area as possible. I am absolutely not an exception as a regular Caf-goer myself. How often one goes to the Caf may depend on a plethora of factors including scheduling, hunger level, and most of all, what is available.

That’s not all Xavier has in terms of dining, as there are also places in the Gallagher Student Center including True Burger, Absurd Bird and Jersey Mike’s. This offers more variety compared to the Caf selections. In your first two years, you have so much at your fingertips.

But while these options are great for a campus meal, the bubble around these few options leaves me feeling a little desperate for some further change to occur.

Over these past two school years, I have seen the options drastically improve. These improvements include initiatives such as Food Truck Fridays and free Metro passes. These have made extraordinary steps to bring undergraduates an experience of Xavier dining on and off campus that broadens their horizons.

It’s easy to say “I wish I had this” but instead I will say “I am glad we are at the point where people are now getting this”. For those who are still not very aware of these and want similar experiences, perhaps the posters aren’t doing enough. Word of mouth, social media, and other methods of communication would do numbers to persuade more people. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell your acquaintances.

Seeing the transition of Xavier dining during my four years here has really made me think how Xavier dining has shown a significant evolution, and even after I am gone, I hope they find more ways to pop the Xavier food bubble.
