The Future GOAT is Victor Wembanyama

 By Ryan Ottiger, Newswire Intern

It is not even a full week into the NBA season and it is already clear that the San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is on his way to MVP territory.

As his third season begins, he has high chances of reaching greatest of all time (GOAT) status in the NBA. In his first game of the season, Wembanyama scored 40 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked three shots en route to a 33-point win over the Dallas Mavericks. This game produced the most dazzling single game highlight tape in NBA history.

Newswire Intern Ryan Ottiger sees a bright NBA career for Spurs center forward Victor Wembanyama.

The current tallest player in the NBA broke down defenders off the dribble, one of which resulted in a step back three pointer while getting fouled. Another foul resulted in an and-one on elite defender Anthony Davis. The others resulting after some of his seven dunks he scored throughout the game.

Before the season started, Wembanyama — already known for his enormous stature — reportedly grew two inches. He is now listed at 7-foot-5-inches, with many analysts like Brian Windhorst claiming he is closer to 7-foot-7-inches. On “NBA Today,” Windhorst was joined by Boban Marjanovic, former NBA player standing at 7-foot-4.

“I’m 7-foot-4. I was looking up at him like… no way I’m taller than him,” Marjanovic said about Wembanyama’s height.

The only question about Wembanyama is his health. Last year, he dealt with deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot located in a vein deep within the body, 46 games into his sophomore season. This  sidelined him for the remainder of last year. The year before, he was healthy and appeared in 71 games.

While many question his health due to his stature, I believe that he will be able to stay healthy. Wembanyama’s training regimen is taken extremely seriously by San Antonio, and has been since before his NBA days in France — as they recognize that he is a one of a kind player  and has potential to be the best ever.

Wembanyama — who is already the tallest player currently in the NBA — has guard-like dribbling abilities and has an amazing shooting touch from outside the paint. Last year, he averaged 24.3 points per game, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 blocks and 1.1 steals before he was sidelined with injury.

We have never seen an NBA player like Wembanyama. There have only been five players in the league’s history who have been reportedly taller than Wembanyama, with the most notable being Yao Ming who stands at 7-foot-6-inches.

While Ming and other giants like Ralph Sampson and Mark Eaton had remarkable NBA careers, they never had the perimeter shooting, ballhandling or athleticism of Wembanyama.

Wembanyama can do everything on the basketball court. He can move, he is a volume three-point shooter with a nice shooting stroke, and he has some of the most impressive dribbling skills in the NBA. He has an eight foot wingspan that allows him to dunk from farther out than any player in the world and he is the best defender in the league by a country mile.

The reality is that we could already be watching the MVP of the 2025-26 season. It seems he has taken a further jump than people were expecting and he looks like he might be the best player the game has ever seen. We have never seen anything like this, so do not be surprised if you see a 22-year-old Wembanyama win MVP and lead the Spurs to compete in a Western Conference playoff run.
