James Talarico (D-Texas) who has previously served as a State Representative as well as a teacher has been elevated to the national scene in recent months. Talarico defeated Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) in the primary by six points, beating expectations from all sides.
He previously worked as an elementary school teacher before becoming a Texas state representative. He declared his candidacy for the Texas Senate election in September of last year, eventually going up against the prominent U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Despite running against a formidable, nationally recognized opponent, Talarico is a unique case, bearing many traits that make it certain he will take the Senate seat in November.
For one, he is a proud Christian. He speaks on his Christian values every opportunity he gets, especially with his campaign slogan, “It’s time to start flipping tables.” He is running on a platform to fight corruption, reduce wealth inequality and bring all people together through his faith values. He is openly opposed to the genocide in Gaza, calls to defund ICE and supports Medicare for all.
Normally this would be a death sentence for a Democrat running in Texas of all places.

Guest writer Connor Juracek argues that James Talarico is bringing opportunity for Democrats in Texas.
However, Talarico has the same advantage as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, framing his left-leaning positions through the lens of Christianity. When speaking about Gaza and the famine that the Palestinian people are facing, Talarico said, “I screamed at God for the starving children until I realized the starving children (were) God screaming at me.” Talarico’s Christian faith is his biggest tool for winning the election.
Along with his Christian faith, the most exceptional advantage for Talarico is the blue wave sweeping across the country. In January 2026, a Texas State Senate seat swung by 32 points, going from Donald Trump +17 in 2024 to Democrat +12. This trend is an indication that Republican voters are experiencing unprecedented voter apathy, as seen by Trump’s all-time-low approval ratings. This apathy translates into voters staying home, giving Democrats major victories in nearly every special election since Trump’s inauguration.
The results of the primary give a clear indication that Talarico has strong support from Democratic voters. He gained a noticeable boost in popularity days before the primary when Trump’s Federal Communications Commission threats to sanction CBS forced the network to withhold Talarico’s interview with Stephen Colbert from airing. The cancellation painted Talarico as a serious player, likely contributing to the race’s historic turnout, with over double the turnout of the 2024 Democratic Senate primary.
Talarico has remarkable momentum, and he has proved his campaign will carry November. His faith-based approach to politics combined with his genuine, calm demeanor give him unmatched voter appeal.
He has a clear mandate from Democratic voters, and he will likely overperform with independent voters. The cancellation of his interview highlighted Talarico as a serious candidate, giving independents greater confidence to vote for him.
Similarly, current polls project that Ken Paxton will beat John Cornyn in the Republican primary. The choice between a sensible, Christian Democrat like Talarico and an extremist, scandal-ridden Republican like Paxton will give independents a stark choice in the general election. His victory in Texas will be a sign that genuine, quality candidates can win, even in a state where Republicans win by 15 points.
Talarico’s general likability, proud Christianity and perfect timing give him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give Texas its first Democratic senator since 1988, and that is exactly what he will do.
