A Review of 2015 Science

By: Andrew Utz ~Staff Writer~ Scientific discoveries occurred every week throughout 2015. Here’s a highlight of what was accomplished. The New Horizons space probe, launched in 2006, completed its journey to the outer edge of our solar system to officially explore the surface of Pluto, as well as other dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt beyond. Once it reached the planet, the probe examined its geography, atmosphere and chemical compositions. In addition, the probe took the first close photographs of the planet, allowing scientists to examine the topography. One-sided Rivalry: Xavier rolls to another Shootout win

By: Andrew Utz ~Staff Writer~ Cintas Center was a full house for the annual Crosstown Shootout, holding 10,617 Xavier and University of Cincinnati fans for the Musketeer’s 65-55 victory. Xavier came out strong in the first half, taking a 10-1 lead after the first five minutes. The Bearcats were held to 42-26 at the half-time buzzer. Junior guard Myles Davis hit a corner three-pointer as the regulation clock expired. At half-time, the Musketeers held the Bearcats to 12 rebounds, while senior forward James Farr and sophomore guard Trevon Bluiett grabbed eight of 20 Xavier rebounds. Swimming teams forge ahead: Two go to Nationals

By: Andrew Utz ~Staff Writer~ Entering their holiday hiatus, the Xavier men’s swimming team surged ahead while the women’s team struggled through a rough invitational. On the weekend of Nov. 6, both teams traveled to Denison University to face off in a dual meet. The men snagged 13 first-place finishes to top the hosts, while the women only placed first in four events, falling to the Big Red. Junior Rodrigo Suriano and freshman Nathan Runyon tied for the top spot in the 100 meter backstroke, hitting the wall in 52.77 seconds.
