Great Lakes to lose funding for pollution and algae cleaning

By: Soondos Mulla-Ossman ~Staff Writer~ The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program launched in 2010 to clean pollution and algae from the world’s largest freshwater system, is under threat after President Donald Trump released his national budget. Among the controversies, withdrawing all funding from the Great Lakes is one of the most devastating to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The lakes currently receive $300 million in annual federal appropriations through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The preliminary budget would also nix grants that provide for low or moderate-income homes in the area. Fischer’s last race

By: Tim Wilmes Senior cross country standout Clare Fischer competed in the NCAA Championship meet held in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23. Fischer finished 203rd overall with a time of 22:06.3 against a group of the nation’s top runners. The four-year Xavier star recently recorded her personal best time of 20:47 at the Great Lakes Regional. In the last cross country meet of her career, Fischer represented her university as the first Xavier runner to compete in the NCAA Championship meet. XUXC runs well in Big East race

By: Chris Behler The Xavier men and women’s cross country teams have shown adaptability this season. With a conference consisting of new teams to compete with in the newly formed Big East, these two squads have had to adjust to some inevitable adversity with a higher set of expectations going forward. They have not disappointed. Last weekend the women took fifth place at the Big East Championship.
