Congress overrides President Obama’s veto on 9/11 bill

By: Azl Saeed ~Staff Writer~ The first Congressional override of President Barack Obama’s eight-year presidency occurred on Sept. 28. Obama previously vetoed legislation that would allow 9/11 victims’ families to sue Saudi Arabia. Since 9/11 is a topic that many Americans feel passionate about, this veto was especially prominent due to the closeness of the presidential election. The Senate voted to override the veto 97-1, and the House voted 348-77, overwhelming majorities for both. Senate Minority leader Harry Reid was the only senator to reject the override. By: Max Creager ~Staff Writer~ Last week, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Barack Obama committed to specific policies that would help curb greenhouse gas emissions. Although Canadian prime ministers in the past had frequently visited Washington, the event marked the first official visit by a Canadian prime minister in 19 years. The two countries issued a joint statement on climate, energy and arctic leadership to re-emphasize their mutual commitment to the Paris climate agreement and lay out specific goals and policy proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and emissions of hydrofluorocarbons. Funding slashed for abstinence-only sex-ed

By: Henry Eden ~Staff Writer~ As part of his 2017 budget proposal, President Barack Obama has attempted to eliminate a $10 million grant that annually funds abstinence-only sex education in the U.S. By doing so, the President would eliminate all financial incentive for states to continue promoting an abstinence-only curriculum in school health classes. Funding for abstinence-only education was first allocated by former President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Since then, funding for the program has grown steadily, despite scientific evidence showing it’s ineffective.
