Tensions rise between Saudi Arabia and Iran

By: Erica Lampert ~Staff Writer~ The Arabian country Yemen has become the scene of the Middle East’s second proxy war, which has caused concern in the U.S. about the growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Renewed tensions between the countries led to the execution of 47 people on Jan. 2., adding to the already 6,000 killed since March 2015. More killings occurred Jan. 8 when an airstrike hit near the Iranian embassy in Sanaa. Saudi Arabia and Iran are locked in a spiraling regional showdown, and more countries like Yemen could suffer. By: Meredith Francis ~Campus News Editor~ UVA student injured during arrest Marvese Johnson, a University of Virginia student who is black, was injured while being arrested by officers from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on March 18. Controversy has surrounded the arrest as an image of the bloodied Johnson surfaced after the incident. The officers arrested Johnson for public intoxication and obstruction of justice. The controversy emerges as many suggest this is another example of excessive police force against a black man. The President’s speech touched on various domestic and international issues, such as cyber security, climate change, economic growth and the conflict with ISIS. Obama devoted much of his speech to economic issues and encouraged Congress to adopt policies that would ease financial struggles of the middle class.
