Winter restaurant ideas to warm up

By: Brandon Martin

It is that time of the year. The familiar songs heralding Old Saint Nick have begun dominating the radio airwaves.

Holiday displays have started appearing in all of our favorite stores. We have already been graced with the first snowfall of the season.

The coffee shops have started making the switch from pumpkin spice flavoring to peppermint. As the temperature dips, we seek out the classic comforts of the season to warm us up, not the least of which is food.

There are some great spots around Cincinnati that will warm you from the inside, starting with your stomach.

Gordo’s Pub & Grill is merely a stone’s throw from campus and stands as Norwood’s best kept secret, which is a shame.

An extensive beer and wine list complements the atmosphere which is simple but refined.

The staff is welcoming and willing to help you navigate the impressive assortment of drinks and food items as soon as you seat yourself.

Although the atmosphere is nice and the staff is welcoming, the real champion of Gordo’s Pub & Grill is the food.

All your classic pub favorites are here, but the pride and joy stands in its gourmet burgers.

Gordo’s uses only the finest quality of ingredients and it offers everything from the standard pub burger to such interesting concoctions as the BPJ, which is garnished with fried banana, chunky peanut butter cream cheese, jam and, of course, bacon (don’t knock it till you try it).

Gordo’s is a great place near campus to grab a delicious bite to eat and keep warm.

If you are looking to get away from Xavier for a change of scenery while you combat the elements head over to Clifton and find Sitwell’s Coffee House.

One of the trendiest spots in the city, Sitwell’s Coffee House has been around for the past 16 years.

On any given day you may be greeted by live music (usually acoustic) or the Clifton Chess Club, as well as an assortment of art that graces the walls.

There is a small menu of sandwiches and finger foods, all locally sourced of course, and the list of hot beverages is quite impressive.

If you are searching for a place to go that captures the prototypical college coffee shop experience with amazing coffee and tea while escaping the elements, Sitwell’s Coffee House is the place to be.

Of course there are the Cincinnati staples of Skyline or Tom + Chee that serve great warm comfort food, but I encourage you to try something new
