Xavier community shares what makes X unique

Xavier students, staff and professors are asked: Why do you think Xavier is unique?

“Xavier is unique because I feel like it’s a very tight-knit and close community where everyone is open to one another.” – Kayla Young, junior advertising, public relations and digital media triple major

“Xavier is unique because of its diversity and inclusivity and history all around Xavier and Cincinnati and all the activities for non-school happenings and Fr. B. I love him.” – Emma Barlow, senior HAB major

“I think Xavier is unique because of the community that is built around it. When I was looking for schools, I uh… I never got the same feel except for Xavier. Everyone just seemed so happy and proud to be here. Everyone seemed so happy to have graduated from here, and I really never felt this kind of excitement for community when I was looking anywhere else.” – CJ Karwowski, sophomore history major

“I like the inclusivity of Xavier… Everywhere else that I visited it wasn’t like homey, like that home feeling. Xavier just makes me feel at home.” – Drew Philips, first-year exercise science major

“What makes Xavier unique is the people. There are so many great characters on this campus that makes it different from any other I visited.” – Katie Nichols, sophomore English major

“I think both institutionally and Xavier students have a good sense of what it means to be Xavier University. Our identity is really strong, and that’s obviously rooted in our Jesuit Catholic tradition. But it’s also rooted in the fact that we’re in Cincinnati and you know, majority midwestern and just the way our campus is… I think that like we are unique not because we are unique, but because we know that, and we live into that. I don’t feel that Xavier tries to be someone else, like a different school… and I think that’s pretty special.” – Abby Anderson, Center for Faith and Justice assistant director

“For me the students are special, and they’re intentional about their experience at Xavier and what they want to get out of the experience.” – Kim Diehl de Yanes, director of International Education

“So, I think that Xavier is unique because the students come to class really engaged and already thinking about how to apply information to how they want to take it to the rest of the world. So, whatever their major is, they’re already thinking about application and thinking big picture. I think maybe that – that is the key: that Xavier students think big picture and are far more collaborative than I’ve experienced at other places.” – Dr. Travis Speice, sociology professor

“I think that … the Xavier difference is in our people, and I think it’s because we – as faculty and staff here and as students – we are all sort of dedicated to these Ignatian ideals of education of the whole person and giving more and … digging deep and engaging in hard questions and really trying to be, really trying to work for the greater good in everything that we do, whether that’s in classes or as we’re learning to try to do things when we get out of here. And I think that that really makes this place special, and I think that’s one of the things I see in my students after they graduate and my students as they are here. I think that’s really what makes this place different than all the other places, that not only are we dedicated to those places, but we also talk about them.” – Dr. Ann Ray, biology professor
