The Mile Marker Makes Its Mark on Campus

By Teagan Revelle, Newswire Intern

The Mile Marker is a student-run bar that, after months of planning, opened on the corner of Dana Avenue and Montgomery Road on Oct. 15.

The atmosphere of the bar is designed to be welcoming. Students can come as they are, dressed casually and can get comfortable in the indoor or outdoor seating areas.

The outside seating area was a quieter alternative to the inside, which was filled with people playing pool, darts and multiple arcade games.

Considering its college-age target audience, the Mile Marker also offers food among its various forms of entertainment.

Two young men are behind a bar, one pouring a drink from a shaker while the other holds a glass with a smile. The bar is stocked with various bottles and a menu is visible on the counter.

Last week, Xavier’s student-led bar, the Mile Marker, opened publicly.

The Mile Marker is open Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m.–12 a.m. and hosts events like weekly Thursday Football, Free Game Friday and DJ Ganza Saturday.

“The first night was definitely our busiest night. The next two nights were not as packed, but still a good sized crowd,” senior business analytics major and bartender at the Mile Marker Charlie King said.

King also emphasized the success, in his eyes, of the Mile Marker’s first weekend open to the public.

“It went even better than I had hoped for. I think it was a great glimpse into what the future can look like for the Mile Marker. We offer great drinks, food and music, as well as free pool and darts. I think it will turn into a spot where Xavier students will come and hang out every weekend,” King said.

The introduction of the Mile Marker to the Xavier community may lead students and locals alike to wonder how its future fits in with another beloved Xavier bar, Dana Gardens. Unlike Dana Gardens, the Mile Marker allows those under the age of 21 to attend.

The Mile Marker was made possible with the help of The Sedler Xavier Center for Experiential Learning (XCEL), where students can work hand in hand with their classroom learning and gain real-world business experience.

XCEL has helped provide students with student-led business opportunities like Better Blend Xavier, Xavier Element and now the Mile Marker.

The Mile Marker will officially cut the ribbon on its Grand Opening on Thursday, Oct. 22.
