Sugar and Spice Reopens and Everything’s Nice

By Kayla Ross, Back Page Editor

Sugar and Spice has officially reopened its Reading Road location after the diner closed in November of 2022 for renovations. The diner has been located at 4381 Reading Road for 83 years, with two other newer locations in Blue Ash and Over-the-Rhine (OTR).

The Reading Road location opened in 1941, becoming a staple in the Norwood community — known best for its classic breakfast foods. Sugar and Spice has grown from their original reputation in the area with the opening of a second location in OTR in 2020 and a third location in Blue Ash in 2023. The owners had reportedly hoped to reopen the Reading Road location in June of 2023 but faced several setbacks throughout the renovation process.

“It is very nice being open again. I have been going to this place since I was four years old. The cash register is the same, but we have an all new room, which is a lot better for people to come in [to eat], and a new to-go kitchen, which means that our grill won’t get all backed up,” Star, a host and server at the diner, said.

Since opening, Blue Ash and OTR locations have gained popularity. These locations maintain the same vintage pastel aesthetic as the Reading Road location has always had.

The recent renovations to the Reading Road location have updated it functionally, while keeping the original charm of the diner. This location maintains its authentic old-school look. The 1,200 square foot addition to the building  is being used to fit more seating areas for both dining and waiting.

Beyond the updates to the appearance of the building, the renovations also included updates to the kitchen and bathrooms so that the building would be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“They were able to keep their authenticity through the renovations. It still has the same feel, but with a lot more space for people to be able to enjoy the food,” junior Savanna Riley said.

Sugar and Spice’s Reading Road location is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Try the wispy thin pancakes; you won’t regret it.
