Opinion: Don’t Let Fans Ruin Your Super Bowl Experience

By Christian Cullen, Staff Writer

This year’s Super Bowl is going to be played with a 15-2 team that is going for a three-peat and has entrenched themselves as the best dynasty of the 2020s, and at the least, top five team of all time.

Against them is a 14-3 team, draped in history but not much to show for it: only one recent Super Bowl win, but a plethora of appearances. They’re led by energetic, exciting players on both offense and defense. When I describe it like that, you are likely happy that that’s the Super Bowl matchup, only to get a scowl on your face when I tell you it’s Chiefs-Eagles round two.

By all means, this game should electrify people. It is, in all likelihood, the two best teams this year going against each other. Yet, all I have seen on social media is a bounty of people complaining. I even saw people claiming they would boycott the game. Clearly, people are unhappy.

I get it, we have seen this matchup before. The Chiefs are annoying. The Eagles play at a pace that would make tectonic plates blush. Ever since Kansas City gutted out yet another win over the Bills, it seems that no one is excited about this matchup when they really should be.

Some fans have refused to watch Kansas City games because of the presence of tight end Travis Kelce’s partner Taylor Swift, but her presence at the games has brought a new crowd of fans to football, making Kelce’s jersey one of the highest selling.

I think NFL fans are being mighty entitled right now. Sure, the Washington Commanders were a fun story, and the Bills should have gotten their shot to win a Super Bowl. But guess what? The Commanders were clearly outmatched against Philly, and the Bills came up short once again.

People have, as per usual after a close Chiefs win, pointed to the refs. However, the Bills had another chance after that fourth down. Is officiating in the NFL perfect? No, but in the championship game, it was even. The Bills lost. These are the two best teams in the league.

Not only that, but they have perfectly opposing styles. Philadelphia loves to pound the ball on the ground, which is what the Chiefs excel at stopping. Kansas City prefers to move the ball through the air, which I am sure the Eagle’s young defensive back group will have something to say about on Super Bowl Sunday. This is a wonderful matchup.

I’ll acknowledge some of the justifiable annoyances with the matchup. Eagles fans do not know how to act, and I would not necessarily call Nick Sirianni a class act. Kansas City seems to get every call in their favor, and when they do not, they cut to Taylor Swift in the broadcast booth. Most importantly, this is a rematch.

However, I ask you this, dear reader, what is so bad about a rematch? If anything, it adds just another layer to this matchup. In terms of the baggage each team is carrying into the game, I get the hesitation. But do not let them stop you from watching what should be, by all rights, an absolutely fantastic game.

While there are some grievances to air, the people who are talking down about the Super Bowl this year are acting entitled. Maybe you didn’t want the Chiefs. Maybe you didn’t want the Eagles. Maybe you didn’t want either. But guess what, it’s what the matchup is, and if you look at the matchup without your rose-colored glasses for a half second, it will be a close game.

Don’t let your feelings about Buffalo or Washington stop you from this game. Myself? I’ll be parked in front of my TV, hoping to see the first three-peat in NFL history.
