The Ozempic Epidemic Needs to be Stopped

By Reshelle Bihasa, Staff Writer

Celebrities have been taking advantage of Ozempic as their “magic pill” to lose weight. Not only is this concerning but can also be indirectly harmful to those who have type 2 diabetes and other health conditions who require this medication.

Nowadays, Hollywood thinks the most conventionally attractive looks are sunken eyes, hollowed cheekbones, disproportionate volume loss, protruding collarbones, ribs and sagging skin. Top it off with a little bit of Botox, and you have Hollywood’s ideal dream figure.

Ozempic is a medication that is primarily used to help individuals lower their blood glucose level and improve their blood sugar, reducing the risk of strokes, heart attacks and increase protection against kidney disease and other health-related conditions.

However, the main issue is the side effects associated with this drug and other GLP-1s that contain a hormone that regulates and dramatically reduces appetite. This massive surge of use by celebrities and influencers has created trends known as “#Ozempic” and “#OzempicChallenge” which have led to a medication shortage.

While these effects may go unnoticed, the physical changes in celebrities are almost impossible to ignore.

Many suspect that Ariana Grande was recently on Ozempic even though it has not been publicly confirmed. In the “Wicked” movies and press tour, fans noticed that she and other cast members were thin to the point where their bones were visibly prominent. Recently, she stepped down from the “Eternal Sunshine” tour to focus on her health after intense public scrutiny.

Not only is this concerning, but it can also take away from the film because it is the first thing the audience notices. According to CNN, a parenting coach who specializes in eating disorders claimed that parents have expressed concern about images and how it may affect their children, especially those who could be triggered from past eating disorders.

Admittedly, being skinny does not necessarily mean Ozempic is being used. Losing weight in a healthy manner is completely acceptable. On the other hand, sudden drastic changes in physical appearance, can leave audiences with increasing concern and should not be encouraged.

The media is also starting to normalize viewing normal healthy bodies as “chunky” or “fat,” undeniably ruining body images for children and younger audiences.

Other celebrities who have been assumed to use Ozempic include Katy Perry, Emma Stone, Elon Musk, Malia Baker, Cynthia Erivo and more. Several celebrities have admitted to using Ozempic and share how it has helped them.

Serena Williams claims that GLP-1 medication has helped her get her weight to a healthy place, and her joints feel lighter. Meghan Trainer shared backlash about her body weight transformation by using a drug called Mounjaro and says to be at the best version of herself working with a trainer and dietician as well.

Regardless of the use and misuse of Ozempic, the long-term effect of the medication is not yet known, and has been shown in some cases to lead into osteoporosis, which can cause bones to become more porous and fracture.

Is a quick weight loss drug worth it to have all these extra unhealthy side effects? Instead of giving plastic surgeons and large pharmaceutical manufacturers more business, save the Ozempic for those who medically need it.
