Despite the cold weather and torrential snow, the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) offered students a brief respite from the freezing temperatures with their fundraiser “Churros and Hot Chocolate.”

SOL sold churros and hot chocolate to raise money for its Gabriel Garcia Marquez Book Scholarship. In honor of the Columbian, Nobel Prize-winning author, the scholarship will be given to a first-year, sophomore or junior member of SOL to help him or her pay for textbooks.

Senior SOL co-President Nancy Martinez hopes that events like “Churros and Hot Chocolate” will help SOL increase its sponsorship for scholarships.

“I think it’s great that a Latino or Hispanic student will receive money for books. It will really help him or her continue their education and, although it’s not a full-ride scholarship, it is helping the student meet his or her educational goals,” Martinez said.

SOL hopes that over time, the club’s sponsorship will grow enough to offer a full-ride scholarship. “We know that will take a long time, but Xavier has been very supportive,” Martinez said.

Applications for the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Book Scholarship will be available soon on SOL’s OrgSync page.

The recipient of the scholarship will be announced at SOL’s Noche de Estrellas Gala on Friday March 28.

If you are interested in learning more about SOL, meetings take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays in the Multicultural, Gender, & Women’s Center.
