The Xavier women’s basketball team fell to Georgetown, 66-58, in Saturday’s matinee at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers are now 8-16 overall and 3-9 in Big East play. The Georgetown Hoyas now improve to 8-16 overall and 2-10 in conference play. The Musketeers are ranked fourth in three-point field goals per game (7.2) in Big East games.
Sophomore forward Briana Glover scored a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-12 from the floor. Despite the loss, Xavier made 10-of-32 shots from behind the arc. Glover grabbed four rebounds, one block and an assist 33 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard Aliyah Zantt finished with 14 points, four rebounds and four steals. Senior Shatyra Hawkes had 11 points and five assists, while senior guard Ashley Wanniger contributed eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Xavier shot 12-31 from the field, making 6-16 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Musketeers forced the Hoyas into nine first half turnovers and were able to capitalize with 10 points off the miscues.
Senior forward Andrea White helped the Hoyas to victory with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman center Natalie Butler also contributed to the win with 16 points and 17 boards. On the whole, Georgetown outrebounded the Musketeers 53-29. Zantt hit a big-time 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the lead to one (30-29) at halftime.
Georgetown came out strong in the second half, taking an 11-point lead (59-48) with 4:15 left in the game. Zantt and Hawkes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the game to 59-54 with 3:16 left in regulation. Xavier was able to pull within four points (62-58) with 43 seconds left but was unable to pull off the win.
Xavier will have a few days before hitting the road this weekend to face Marquette on Feb. 15 in Milwaukee.
