A Diverse Perspective: Part I

In the past year, discussions regarding race, religion, gender and sexuality have played a major role in the national dialogue about diversity. At Xavier, approximately 26 percent of students are considered to be “multicultural students.” It’s no secret that a majority of students on this campus are white and Catholic, and yet hundreds of students on this campus come from other backgrounds: black, Latino, Asian, Muslim, LGBTQ and countless others. PPP students travel to Washington, D.C., to study public policy issues By: Meredith Francis ~Campus News Editor~ Students from the Philosophy, Politics and the Public (PPP) program at Xavier got a glimpse into the world of Washington, D.C., politics when they participated in the program’s annual public policy trip from March 14-17. Each year, the sophomore PPP students select public policy issues to study in the spring semester. In March, the students travel to Washington to meet with experts in congressional offices, non-profit organizations, think tanks and lobbyist firms in order to learn more about their issues. By: Meredith Francis ~Campus News Editor~ UVA student injured during arrest Marvese Johnson, a University of Virginia student who is black, was injured while being arrested by officers from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on March 18. Controversy has surrounded the arrest as an image of the bloodied Johnson surfaced after the incident. The officers arrested Johnson for public intoxication and obstruction of justice. The controversy emerges as many suggest this is another example of excessive police force against a black man.
