By: Meredith Francis ~Campus News Editor~ UVA student injured during arrest Marvese Johnson, a University of Virginia student who is black, was injured while being arrested by officers from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on March 18. Controversy has surrounded the arrest as an image of the bloodied Johnson surfaced after the incident. The officers arrested Johnson for public intoxication and obstruction of justice. The controversy emerges as many suggest this is another example of excessive police force against a black man. By: Meredith Francis ~Campus-News-Editor~ Marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in Alabama A federal judge in Alabama issued a ruling that instructed a probate judge in Mobile County to allow same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses. The ruling sends a message to other Alabama counties after the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court encouraged probate judges in many counties to ignore the federal ruling that struck down same-sex marriage bans. Nigeria continues to fight Boko Haram

By: Richard Meyer ~Copy Editor~ The Nigerian Islamic militant group Boko Haram attempted to take control of Borno’s capital city on Feb. 1. Boko Haram translates as“Western education is forbidden,” and the group was founded in 2002, originally meant to oppose any form of Western education. The extremist group formed a military in 2009 in an attempt to become an Islamic State. The United States declared it a terrorist group in 2013.
