The Xavier track and field team had a successful first meet of the season in Fort Wayne, Ind., at the Mastodon Opener with a total of five individual wins and two school records. The meet included teams such as Butler, Miami (OH), Northern Kentucky, Ball State, IUPUI and Wright State.
On the men’s side, senior Russell Platt placed first in the high jump and set a school record with a height of 2.03 meters.
Platt also secured first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94, the fastest time in the conference.
“Breaking the school record means a lot. My current high jump coach held the record, so it’s nice to have something to brag about with him in practice,” Platt said.
Platt was not the only person who set a school record, as junior Nolan Daniels ran a 1:54.04 in the 800-meter.
Junior Zachary Polk finished in first place in the long jump with a distance of 6.97 meters. Polk also finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.00.
Sophomore Tyler Harmon finished first in the 300-meter dash with a time of 36.39.
In the same race, junior Caleb Hernandez finished third with a time of 37.02. In the 3,000-meter, sophomore Grayson Jenkins came in third with a time of 8:53.27.
Additionally, the 4X400-meter relay team placed second overall with a time of 3:27.66.
On the women’s side, senior Sydney Larkin placed second in the 300-meter dash with a time of 41.52, and freshman Sheridan Davenport placed third with a time of 42.11.
In the 3,000-meter, junior Sarah Billingsley finished third with a time of 10:40.26. Freshman Claire Hathaway placed third overall in the triple jump with a distance of 9.58 meters.
The next meet for the Musketeers is the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 13-14.
