“Kimberly Akimbo,” the 2023 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, recently had a two-week residency at the Aronoff Center.
Running from Feb. 18 to Mar. 2, the show left a lasting impression, combining profound emotion with hilarious moments in a way that only musical theater can.

A glimpse inside the Aronoff center.
Based on David Lindsay-Abaire’s play of the same title, “Kimberly Akimbo” tells the story of Kimberly Levaco, a teenage girl who suffers from a rare, rapid aging condition.. As Kimberly faces the challenges of growing old far before her time, she must navigate the chaos of family dynamics, friendship and the fleeting nature of time.
“Kimberly Akimbo” has been widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. The New York Times called it “profoundly funny and deeply moving,” and Entertainment Weekly described it as leaving audiences “floating high on good vibes.”
With a score by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, the music deeply complements the show’s emotional landscape. From the whimsical to the haunting, the score captures the musical’s heart and humor with grace and vitality.
At the heart of “Kimberly Akimbo” is its stellar cast, with performances that elevate the material to new heights. Carolee Carmello plays the character of Kim, a role that has earned her widespread praise. A three-time Tony nominee, Carmello’s portrays kim in a way that is both hilarious and heartbreaking. She brings to life the deeply complex emotions of a girl who is, in many ways, much older than her years, yet still trapped in the body of someone much older than she should be.
Justin Cooley plays Kimberly’s friend Seth and delivers a standout performance as well. Cooley’s portrayal of Seth is full of charm, wit and depth, earning him multiple award nominations and critical praise. His chemistry with Carmello is palpable, and together, they create a bond that is central to the show’s emotional impact. He originated the role on Broadway, as well.
Though it is deeply rooted in the experience of youth, the musical’s messages about the passage of time, family dynamics and the absurdity of adulthood resonate across generations. The show’s mix of humor, satire and honest reflections on the human experience make it a musical that speaks to everyone — regardless of age.
Winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2023 marked a major milestone for “Kimberly Akimbo.” Not only did it solidify its place in Broadway history, but it also underscored the power of smaller, intimate musical’s ability to make a major cultural impact. With a story that is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking and performances that will leave you moved, “Kimberly Akimbo” has proven that sometimes the most powerful stories come from the most unexpected places.
For those lucky enough to have seen it at the Aronoff Center, it was an unforgettable experience — a reminder to appreciate life, no matter how brief it may seem.
