Xavier to host community event on basketball court access and usage

By: Justin Worthing ~Staff Writer~ Xavier’s Community Building Institute (CBI) along with Recreational Sports will be hosting a Community Welcoming event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 12 at the basketball courts. Staff editorial: cards and fences

The fence and card-activated turnstiles installed around the outdoor basketball courts on campus this winter and the accompanying usage policy will go into effect on April 1. The fence was the object of a student protest in the fall. The protesting students’ critiques and actions do not appear to have had any effect on the administrative decisions regarding fence policy. The policy will have the ramifications that students feared it would: it will restrict court access and usage hours, limiting and marginalizing the Avondale, Norwood and Evanston communities. Letter to the Editor: solidarity does not look like a fence

By: Rachel Snodgrass *Editor’s note: The fence being constructed around the basketball courts costs approximately $170,000 and is funded by a private donor. Since the courts opened in fall of 2010, there have been 60 crimes reported near the courts, 47 of which were crimes of opportunity. As of now, community members will have to take a photo ID card to O’Connor Sports Center before getting an access card that will allow them to use the courts.
