The Musketeers fell to rival Butler University on Friday night by a final score of 2-1, then lost last night to the Bulldogs 1-0 at home in the first round of the Big East Tournament.

The Friday night loss pushed the Musketeers’ record to 10-6-2 overall with a 6-3 record in the Big East. The defeat also caused Xavier to fall in the conference standings, the team with the third seed in the Big East Tournament. Fortunately for Xavier, their opening matchup in the conference tournament gave Xavier the opportunity to avenge its last regular season loss. However, Xavier was unable to capitalize last night, losing to Butler once again.

On Friday night in Indianapolis, Xavier got the scoring started with a goal in the 34th minute scored by senior forward Matt Walker.

Following a cross from freshman forward Jalen Brown, the ball found Walker, who was able to head the ball into the back of the net to put the Musketeers up 1-0. Xavier took that lead into halftime, but surrendered a goal in the 49th minute to knot the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied until the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the 65th minute following a goal off a free kick.

The cross was put five yards in front of goal and finally into the frame, moving the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 with 25 minutes remaining. The Musketeers were unable to notch another goal in the final minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Eric Osswald secured three saves on the game, but was granted another shot at the Bulldogs last night at the Xavier Soccer Complex.

The Musketeers offered less of a fight last night at home. After a Butler goal in the 29th minute, the Musketeers couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the back of the net, eliminating Xavier from the Big East Tournament and ending the team’s season.
